Emerson Considers Expanding to Shakopee, Bringing 500 Jobs

A division of St. Louis-based Emerson Electric Company is considering expanding in Shakopee—a move that would bring about 500 jobs to the city.
 
Emerson Process Management Rosemount—which makes pressure, temperature, flow, level, and safety measurement products for industrial customers—is looking at a 508,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that was built by ADC Telecommunications but never occupied.
 
In an e-mailed statement, Emerson spokesman David Baldridge told Twin Cities Business on Tuesday: “The company is in the early phases of reviewing multiple options for its expansion plan, including the Shakopee site.”
 
The company hasn’t announced a timetable for the project or revealed the other options being considered.
 
The division would bring about 400 new jobs and 100 transfers to the site, according to a memorandum that Shakopee Community Development Director R. Michael Leeks sent to the Shakopee City Council. (The memo didn’t specifically name Emerson, but company and city officials confirmed that the details within it apply to that company.) Roughly 300 of the jobs would be salaried and 200 would be hourly. Average annual wages would range from about $55,000 to $64,000.
 
Emerson would initially occupy about 300,000 square feet of the building, and it would expand into the remaining space as it grows, the memo said. The site would be used to manufacture a new line of products to serve the energy industry.
 
Emerson is requesting an assistance package from Shakopee, Scott County, and the State of Minnesota that totals about $6 million. It includes tax abatements, matching funds for infrastructure-related construction, state Job Skills Partnership Program funds, and sewer access charge credits.
 
At a Tuesday night meeting, the Shakopee City Council is scheduled to discuss whether to offer an incentive package, Leeks said.
 
The expansion would have a major impact on Shakopee, which has a population that’s approaching 38,000 and about 19,000 jobs within its borders, Leeks said.
 
If Emerson selects Shakopee, the old ADC facility would be used to expand Emerson’s Rosemount final assembly operations in Chanhassen, according to Baldridge. The company employs nearly 2,000 in people in the Chanhassen and Eden Prairie area.
 
ADC was based in Eden Prairie and was sold to Tyco Electronics in 2010. The building that Emerson is considering and the surrounding 100-acre site have reportedly been vacant for a decade.
