Allison Kaplan, Editor In Chief

Ali leads content ideation and development for Twin Cities Business — print, digital, and events. She joined TCB in April 2018, after eight years with sister publication Mpls.St.Paul Magazine where she was senior editor of shopping and style, and most recently served as senior deputy editor, overseeing retail and trend coverage as well as digital content. Prior to MSP Communications, she was a columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Her writing has also appeared in Delta SkyLuckyShop Etc., and other newspapers and magazines. An authority on retail and the fashion industry, she created her Ali Shops brand and award-winning blog in 2006 (the dark ages before social media), and eventually brought her independent digital shopping guide to Mpls.St.Paul. In recent years, she’s broadened her scope to coverage of technology, entrepreneurship, development issues, and workplace culture. A frequent event emcee and moderator, she appears regularly as an on-air expert for television and radio. She also hosts the weekly radio show Shop Girls on myTalk107.1.

Adam Platt is executive editor at Twin Cities Business magazine, a position he has held since 2011. He assigns, edits, and writes features stories, concepts and edits our Starters section, and helps set the overall editorial course for the magazine while ensuring copy is flowing as it should. A seasoned journalist-turned-editor, he attended Macalester College in St. Paul, became a staff writer and media critic for the Twin Cities Reader, moved on to become editor of Casino Executive, and then joined Mpls.St.Paul magazine in 1998, where he served as executive editor until joining TCB.

Liz Fedor, Trending Editor

Liz Fedor joined TCB in September 2013. She assigns, edits, and writes the magazine's Trending sections, which provide business leaders with the latest information on specific industries. She’s an 11-year veteran of the Star Tribune, where she reported on the airline industry and manufacturing, and supervised coverage of agriculture, consumer issues, and the housing market. Before that, she was editorial page editor, Minnesota political reporter, and a columnist at the Grand Forks Herald.

Burl Gilyard, Senior Writer

Burl Gilyard joined the magazine in July 2013 as senior writer, a role in which he writes major feature stories, as well as shorter stories for print, web, and our Briefcase e-newsletter. Prior to joining TCB, he worked as a staff writer for Finance & Commerce, covering commercial real estate and development. His past experience includes working at the Twin Cities Reader, Corporate Report, and City Pages. He also worked from 2001 to 2004 as a freelance writer focusing on regional magazine work.

Tess Allen joined the Twin Cities Business team in January 2019, after interning with their sister publications, Delta Sky and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. As associate editor, she oversees special sections and supplements, covers entrepreneurship and local startups, and helps manage the monthly print magazine. Prior to diving into the magazine world, she interned with several business startups and nonprofit organizations. Tess is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Media and Journalism.

Dan Niepow joined Twin Cities Business in May 2019. As digital editor, he oversees the magazine’s website, daily news operation, e-newsletters, and social media presence. He began his magazine editing career in 2013 as an intern for Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. He went on to work for Milwaukee Magazine, Progressive Railroading, and the Grand Forks Herald. Dan is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kait Ecker joined Twin Cities Business in February 2020, after interning for TCB’s sister publication Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. She writes daily articles for the website, contributes to the print magazine, and assists with e-newsletter production. She previously wrote for Minnesota Monthly and the Minnesota Daily while in school. Kait is a graduate of the University of Minnesota.

Gene Rebeck, Northern Minnesota Correspondent

Gene Rebeck, a former Twin Cities Business senior editor, serves as the magazine's northern Minnesota correspondent. Now a resident of Duluth, he covers established and emerging businesses in the region and also works as a freelance editor. His writing work has won several awards from the Minnesota Magazine Publishers Association and the American Society of Regional Business Publications. Before joining TCB, he was editorial director for a St. Paul trade publisher, as well as a freelance business and travel writer.

Chris makes this magazine look great every month. Her 35 years of art direction include Better Homes and GardensMpls.St.Paul, and running her own design firm. She also has written and illustrated three children’s books.
